90 year old inmate seeks for freedom

Lola Petra is the eldest inmate inside the Correctional Institution for women in Mandaluyong. At the age of 90 years old, she is now having trouble walking and is suffering from a skin disease due to the hot temperature inside the institution.

Her case is falsification of public documents but she is illiterate. Under the Law, if an inmate reaches the age of 70 she is already eligible for parole but in this case Lola Petra's parole was not yet approved.

The estimate for the total number of senior citizens inside Correctional Institution for Women is more than 300. And most of them are suffering from sickness.

Rosemary, 65, needed to be lifted because she is weak due to malnutrition. P30 is the budget for the meal of each inmate that is why most of them doesn't get the nutrients that they need. And most of them are depending on the foods that their loved ones are bringing. But in this case, Rosemary's son had not visited her for 7 years now.

Aside from the meal, medical treatment is also one of the major problems inside. P3 per person for each day is the budget for the medicine of the inmates.

There is no special treatment inside the treatment is more on humane,
said the Penal  Institution Supervisor.

Senate Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile who's is currently facing the charges for plunder and graft asked the Sandiganbayan to put him under hospital arrest.

But some of the inmates are not in favor of this request. Like, Lola Cris had been serving for 21 years and one of her eye is blinded because of diabetes.

She claims that if she was able to handle the 21 years of imprisonment for one crime, then others should also deal with it.

She believes that all who have sinned shall be punished. Lola Petra claims to be free and is pleading for her freedom.

Executive clemency is what the senior citizens are asking for. They have already suffered for the crimes that they have done and they wishes to have the freedom for their remaining days.
