MANILA - TV host Grace Lee, the former girlfriend of President Benigno Aquino III, spoke up on the chief executive's absence from the arrival honors for the fallen men of the Philippine National Police - Special Action Force (SAF) on Thursday.
On Instagram, Lee reacted to a tweet from singer Leah Navarro, who lent her voice to the People Power Revolution in 1986.
Referring to the trending hashtag #NasaanAngPangulo, Navarro said: "So how many of those people who dissed the President's absence from Villamor were actually there to condole?"
As bodies of the slain SAF commandos arrived at the Villamor Air Base in Pasay City, Aquino, a known car enthusiast, was in Sta. Rosa, Laguna to attend the inauguration of the new manufacturing plant of Mitsubishi Motors Philippines.
Netizens who used the hashtag #NasaanAngPangulo noted that Aquino was able to accommodate an interview with comedian Vice Ganda, and attended a screening of the comedy film "The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin," as well as the wedding of celebrity couple Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera, and yet couldn't make time for the arrival honors.
Reacting to Navarro's tweet, Lee said: "There is only one head of the state. Only one commander in chief! You CANNOT compare the value of his presence to the presence of any ordinary citizen then use it against them when they voice out their frustration and anger!"
Lee, a Korean DJ who successfully transitioned to television hosting, was romantically linked with Aquino in 2012. It was only in the December interview of Aquino with Vice Ganda, shown early this year, however, that Aquino confirmed Lee was his girlfriend for a time.
